Kick That ‘Desperate Housewives Out! (UPDATED)

Filed under: Ano Nga Ulit Yon?,Hmmp,Pasaway — kengkay @ 5:42 hapon

Desperate Housewives’s Teri Hatcher’s character said to her OB that she hopes “he’s not a graduate of some Philippine Med School”.

If it is supposed to be a joke coming from a small brained character portrayed by Teri Hatcher in that said series, tanggapin lang ba natin na ganun yon? This is a top show. This would be repeated and translated all over the globe. Kung yung ibang lahi e hinayaan nila ang sarili nila na maging paraan para tumaas ang ratings ng show na ito dahil sa mga slurs na ganyan e di pumiyok, aba, desisyon nila iyon.

Ang sa akin, we must do something about it. Marami palang di nakaka-alam na ang mga pinoys e meron ding brains aside from skills; aba, aba, let’s consider this a challenge to inform them what we really, really are; what we really, really can. Pero bago yan, pwede ba, kick that ‘Desperate Housewives’ out of your television sets!

Check out this site if you want to watch the video.

Dear fellow Pinoy Moms:

Last night, Desperate Housewives, in their season premiere insulted the Philippine doctors. I took it as an insult to all of us, and I am in this crusade trying to get our voice heard and our dignity defended, but i am just a stay at home mom watching a toddler who happens to be taking a nap right now.

Is there any of you who can get someone from the government to help us? I want ABC in the news, I want Desperate Housewives in the news, making an apology to the Philippine medical community, including the nurses, therapists, and caregivers, and to every single Filipino offended by their script. Can the Philippines sue ABC the tv network?

I want ABC to apologize to all Filipino mothers who are raising their children to be good citizens of the Philippines and other countries. We have children born abroad, children who moved abroad, and I can’t just sit down and watch a show insult all of us.

Whover can help, i appreciate it. Please reply to That’s still me, i created the email address for this purpose.

Thank you and God Bless

Jeannie Hizon

Hello Kababayan,
I’m a Filipina living in Michigan and a proud Phil.Nursing Sch.graduate. I was outraged by last night’s episode and I’m glad many of us feel the same way. I have many friends who are doctors, nurses & physical therapists who work very very hard to make a living here, ABC owes us all an apology for that very insensitive remark.
I posted a bulletin in my Friendster Account this morning, here it is:

Date: Monday, October 1, 2007 5:07 AM
Subject: OFFENSIVE Remark Abt.FILIPINO DOCs on Des.Housewives
Message: Monday, Oct.01.07I watched the Premiere of Desperate
Housewives last night on ABC and was
very offended by the remark of Teri
Hatcher’s character about Filipino
doctors. She said to her OB that she
hopes “he’s not a graduate of some
Philippine Med School”. I’m married to
a Caucasian and you can just imagine
how sensitive I am about racial
matters 😦 It was ONE line but I heard
it loud and clear and I hated it. Why?
because the writers were insensitive
and that line was downright offensive
to Filipino Doctors /healthcare
workers and the whole Filipino
Community as a whole. To think that
SOOOO many Philippine grad.doc /nurses
work here, how dare they include such
line? I’m glad I’m NOT the only one
who caught it, when I checked the
show’s website message board, it is
overflowing with sentiments as mine.Sad, -WaltzHere are some:”from user:UPMed”
I agree. Totally unacceptable! I loved
DH before today. Teri Hatcher (aka
Susan) is not an innocent mouthpiece.
She knew what she was saying. If the
writer and director were ignorant
morons, then she should have taken it
upon herself to question the script.
Well I guess she is as dumb as her
character. DH may be fictional BUT it
promotes an unfounded stereotype of
Doctors that graduated from
Philippine med schools. If some
Filipino viewers who posted messages
on this board think it was “ok and no
big deal” then they are entitled to
feel that way. But personally, as a
Filipino, this was foul! Philippine
graduate doctors working in the USA
are one of the finest in the world.
They have come so far to get the
respect they have rightfully earned in
this country and in the world, only to
be bad mouthed by some ignorant
actress. ABC has no right to
stereotype graduates of Philippine
Medical schools that way. There may
be a few schools in the Philippines
that may not be at par with
international standards but by and
large, graduates of Philippine Medical
schools are topnotch. ABC should be
ashamed. And yes, it’s a big deal if
you wrongfully stereotype a group of
top notch professionals.

true libra said get a life and the
insensitive writers of these program
meant that we filipino doctors do not
know what we are doing. so i hope
when you get sick a FILIPINO
healthcare giver will see you. You
will see in almost all the hospital
here in the US there are FILIPINO
nurses and doctors in every
hospital. It is because we are
competent, we have passed all your
requisites and we want an APOLOGY.
This is the last time we are going to
watch your show!!!!”User:VMyron”
that line spoken by Susan Mayers about
checking the O.B. Gyn’s credentials to
make sure he is not some doctor from
Philippine med school is derogatory
and unacceptable. Filipino doctors
are treating many Americans and people
all over the world. I think you
should fire your writer and every
other person involved in letting this
script ‘pass.’ That alone is not
enough, you better come up with a way
to correct your mistake. Thousands
of America’s elders, men, women and
children depend on Filipinos.
Insulting our doctors is insulting a
whole country of us.

  3. It maybe just a tv show but that is very racist and it’s NOT funny. What were they thinking? Any updates from those who watched it?

On the good news tho, that Britney Spears latest single PIECES OF ME, Philippines was included in the lyrics, she sings like this:

“I’m Miss American Dream since I was 17
Don’t matter if I step on the scene
Or sneak away to the Philippines
They still got pictures of my derrière in the magazine
You want a piece of me?
You want a piece of me…”

I feel honored at some point that she put Philippines in the lyrics even if she doesn’t know where our country is. O ayan, magiging popular sya lalo na’t sinali nya ang PINAS sa lyrics.

  33. To the comment on the Jena 6, not all the blacks are necessarily behind it. Stop spouting Jesse Jackson/Al sharpton. It was a complete and racial attack (read the situation behind it) but it was handled very poorly. The kids however don’t deserve manslaugher charges or whatever stupid thing they are getting them on.

Back to the isyu, Its a stupid joke, base sa american humor. However it won’t ruin the careers of pinoys in the medical field one bit. If they have established the credibility already, then the patients won’t rely on a stupid show to tell them differently. In fact, its shameful it got so much of our people’s attention and I wonder, panu ung halalan 2007 and the other events that are more significant for pinas? Has Nationalism sunk so low na mas importante ang isang ficticious claim in form a joke kay sa mga kababayan natin dito sa Pinas?
